CONG ALLEGES DIRECT INVOLVEMENT OF BJP LEADERS
Even as the Gujarat police nabbed 22 persons in connection groundnut procurement irregularities in Saurashtra region, the issue has taken political turn following Congress party’s serious allegations of direct involvement of BJP leaders terming the irregularities as multi-crore scam.
Groundnut is one of the major crops being taken by the farmers of politically voltile Saurashtra region. Hence, it affects thousands of farmers across the region. Aparently Congress leaders are leaving no stone unturned to raise the issue in public keeping an eye on the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
In the 2017 Assembly polls, Congress won 30 out of 54 seats in the region dominated by Patidar community. In districts like Morbi, Amreli, Gir Somanath and Junagadh it was almost complete rout of ruling BJP. If Congress would repeat the 2017’s performance in 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Saurashra region, it would be difficult for the ruling BJP to retain all 26 seats.
Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Paresh Dhanani claimed that the scam could be more than Rs 4000 crore. Dhanani, the Patidar leader and MLA from Amreli seat is roaming around across Saurashtra and raising the issue in public. Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Chavda alleged direct involvement of BJP leaders and demanded High Court monitored probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
